How to Migrate BCS to SecureEdge

How to Migrate BCS to SecureEdge

This article outlines the steps required to migrate your Barracuda Content Shield (BCS) account to SecureEdge, a next-generation security platform with DNS-based web filtering, AI-driven content inspection, and Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), all managed via the unified, cloud-based SecureEdge Manager portal.

BCS-to-SecureEdge migrations are activated on a per-account basis. To activate, please contact support at Contact Support or consult Barracuda sales.

Prerequisites before Migration

  • Ensure you complete all necessary changes in BCS before starting migration. Once started, you cannot revert or retry. Make all changes to users, policies, and locations before clicking the START button.

  • If your account uses the DC Agent user directory, ensure all users have valid email addresses; users without valid emails will not migrate.

  • To upgrade to SecureEdge Internet Access, you need a valid BCS subscription and an appropriate account in Barracuda Content Shield.

SecureEdge notifies BCS once the account migration is complete. After BCS marks an account as migrated, the user interface will turn read-only after a specified number of days, and the Migrate button will be disabled.

During the migration, a progress bar will be shown to track the import process. The migration is executed in the following sequence:

  1. Users, Groups, and Directory Settings – Imports all user accounts, group memberships, and associated directory configurations.

  2. Advanced Policies – Migrates custom and advanced policy configurations.

  3. Everyone Policies – Transfers policies that apply to all users.

  4. SSL-Inspected Policies – Migrates policies related to SSL Inspection.

  5. Enrolled Users and Groups – Imports enrollment data for specific users and groups.

  6. DNS Policies – Transfers DNS policies.

  7. Block Page Policies – Migrates configurations for block pages displayed to end users.

Note: The account remains in read-only mode throughout the migration process to ensure data integrity.

(Optional) Initiating Migration for MSP Account

  1. Go to the Accounts page of Barracuda Content Shield.

  2. Click START next to the MANAGE button.

    msp-02.png
  3. When an account is marked for migration, you will see the following:

    • The migration status and read-only status will be displayed.

    • The START button will change to NEXT when the configuration is ready to copy to SecureEdge.

    • An informational banner will appear once an account on the MSP view is marked with the feature flag.

    • No button will appear next to the MANAGE button after the account is successfully marked as migrated.

  4. When a BCS account is flagged as migrated, the user interface will become read-only after a specified number of days, and the MANAGE button will disappear.

Note that the BCS migration to SecureEdge will fail under these conditions:

  • If the BCC Account ID does not match the logged-in SecureEdge account, the migration will fail with an error message.

  • If a user has an active SecureEdge account, migration is not permitted. Migration is only available for users without existing SecureEdge accounts.

  • If the MIGRATE button is clicked while the network is down, an error will be displayed and redirection will be prevented.

  • If the MIGRATE button is clicked from multiple tabs or browsers. Only one active session is allowed.

  • If the user session times out during migration. Users can migrate after logging back in.

  • If the user selects a workspace with a conflicting name or ID from another user.

  • If the user skips a mandatory wizard step (e.g., POP setup) by navigating back or forward.

  • If invalid characters in usernames are used, migration will fail validation.
