Automatic Time Server (NTP) vs Manual and Barracuda RMM

Automatic Time Server (NTP) vs Manual and Barracuda RMM

The Barracuda RMM Support Team has noticed that, from time to time, partners contact us about two common issues related to a device’s date and time settings. This article will briefly explain the importance of setting up devices to use the default NTP servers, rather than manually entering the time zone, date and time.

The Barracuda RMM infrastructure on our back end uses Microsoft's default automatic NTP settings to keep time for our licensing server and service centers. As such, if these are set manually, the timing may be off by more than 60 seconds, causing two problems. They are as follows:

  • Login failures to the Barracuda RMM service center due to incorrect Authenticator Code entry

  • Successfully installed Device Managers do not show up in the Service Center

Both are avoidable by setting your device (whether your mobile phone for the authenticator app or your Windows device for Device Managers) to use the built-in automatic NTP server. Bypassing these can cause issues, and Barracuda RMM Support will ask you to set the time zone, date, and time to automatic settings.
