Re-Provision a Barracuda Backup Vx Appliance

Re-Provision a Barracuda Backup Vx Appliance

Use this article when you need to deploy a new Barracuda Backup Vx appliance instance and move your existing Barracuda Backup Vx licensing and migrated data to it. This process is typically used when the original virtual appliance cannot be reused, but you still want to retain your existing Barracuda Backup configuration and protected data.

When to use this procedure

You may need to re-provision a Barracuda Backup Vx appliance in the following situations:

  • You are moving to new hypervisor hardware and need a fresh Vx deployment.

  • The original Vx image is corrupted.

  • The original virtual appliance has an issue that cannot be resolved through normal troubleshooting.

  • Barracuda Networks Technical Support has advised you to deploy a new Vx instance.

Important:

  • Re-provisioning creates a new Vx instance with a new serial number first. Later in the process, your account team and Barracuda Networks Technical Support help align licensing and migrate data from the old appliance to the new one.

  • If the original Vx appliance is no longer accessible, corrupt, or otherwise unusable, migration is possible only when a working Box-to-Box replication or Cloud Replication configuration is already in place.

Re-provision the Vx appliance

  1. Go to the Barracuda Backup free trial request form and request a new Barracuda Backup Vx trial.

  2. Go to Barracuda Backup Downloads and download the correct Barracuda Backup Vx image for your environment.

Note: Make sure to select the correct Product Model:

  • V90 – Old license model (licensed based on CPU sockets)

  • V3000 – New license model (licensed based on storage capacity in terabytes)

Selecting the wrong model may cause licensing mismatches that require additional steps to resolve.

  1. Provision the new virtual appliance the same way you would for a standard new deployment. For deployment instructions, see Deploy a Barracuda Backup Virtual Appliance.

  2. Confirm that the new appliance has the same or equivalent CPU, RAM, and storage allocation as the original Vx appliance.

  3. Contact your Barracuda Networks account manager or account representative and request that the new Vx trial be converted to a standard license that matches the original Vx licensing.

  4. Once the license has been updated, activate and link the new Vx appliance in Barracuda Cloud Control. See Link the Barracuda Backup Vx and Receiver Vx.

  5. After the new appliance is activated, contact Barracuda Networks Technical Support to migrate configuration and data from the old serial number to the new serial number.

Tip: Keep the original Vx appliance available until Barracuda Networks Technical Support confirms the migration approach and status. This can help reduce delays if information from the original appliance is needed.

What happens during migration

After the new Vx appliance is activated, Barracuda Networks Technical Support will guide the migration from the old appliance serial number to the new one. The process generally follows this order:

  1. Configuration and metadata transfer – This is the first major step. Metadata includes backup configuration and schedule data.

  2. Backups resume – Once metadata is in place, the new appliance can begin normal backup operations.

  3. Binary data transfer – Backed-up data, which includes the actual backed-up files, transfers in the background and may take longer depending on the amount of protected data, available bandwidth, and appliance resources.
