License Definitions - Email Protection Products
This article describes the licensing definitions for Barracuda email protection products.
Barracuda Email Protection Plans
For Microsoft 365: Barracuda Networks requires the same number of licenses as the number of mailboxes that have an Exchange license in the organization's Microsoft 365 account.
For Google Workspace: Barracuda Networks requires the same number of licenses as the number of user mailboxes that are active and able to send or receive email in the organization's Google Workspace domain(s).
Standalone Products and Legacy Bundles
For customers using Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and Impersonation Protection (formerly Barracuda Sentinel) and/or Incident Response (formerly Barracuda Forensics)
Barracuda Networks requires the same number of licenses as the number of licensed user mailboxes in the organization’s email environment. This mailbox count for Impersonation Protection or Incident Response will be used for all Barracuda SaaS products.
For customers using Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace but not using Impersonation Protection (formerly Barracuda Sentinel) or Incident Response (formerly Barracuda Forensics)
Barracuda Networks requires the same number of licenses as the organization's monthly active recipients. This count includes all email addresses that are receiving emails, along with users whose email is being archived. Email aliases, distribution lists (including Google Groups), and invalid recipients are excluded from this count, as long as they are marked as such within the Barracuda Networks product.
Shared Mailboxes
For Microsoft 365: Microsoft requires a license for shared mailboxes larger than 50GB. As such, Barracuda Networks also requires a license for any shared mailboxes over 50GB.
For Google Workspace: All shared mailboxes are licensed.
All Email Protection Products
For Microsoft 365, the platform provides Barracuda email protection products with a list of accounts in your tenant. If the account is enabled and Exchange is provisioned with an active Microsoft 365 paid plan for Exchange, that account is processed as a unique licensed mailbox.
For Google Workspace, the platform provides Barracuda email protection products with a list of accounts in your domain(s). If the account is active and provisioned with Gmail (a user mailbox), that account is processed as a unique licensed mailbox.
