Restore Page

The Restore page lets you browse backed-up data and recover or export selected items from protected data sources.

What you can do on this page

  • Select a connection and data source to view available backups.

  • Browse folders, mailboxes, sites, users, Teams, and other backed-up content.

  • Use search and filters to locate specific items.

  • View available revisions for supported items.

  • Restore data to its original location or an alternate location.

  • Export backed-up data to your local machine or Microsoft Azure.

  • Purge backed-up data if your account has purge permissions.

Restore data

To restore data, open the Restore page, choose the data source, select the items to recover, and click Restore. You can restore items to the Original Location or an Alternate Location, depending on the data source.

For detailed restore instructions, see How to Restore a Data Source and How to Restore an Entra ID Data Source.

Export data

To export data, open the Restore page, choose the data source, select the items to export, and click Export. You can export items to Local and Microsoft Azure, depending on the data source.

For detailed export instructions, see How to Export a Data Source and How to Export an Entra ID Data Source.

Restore and export backup revisions

Click the revisions icon to view all recoverable and exportable backup revisions for an item. You can also search for revisions by date or select a preset range.

For detailed instructions, see How to Back Up and Restore Your Microsoft Data.

Purge on-demand

Permanently delete backed-up data and all associated revisions. You can target specific files, folders, or user data without affecting the rest of your backup set. The purge function only applies to items already deleted from your active environment.

Purged data is retained for a 30-day grace period before final deletion. After the grace period, data is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. All purge activities are recorded in the Audit Log.

For detailed instructions, see How to Back Up and Restore Your Microsoft Data.

Search and filter

Use the folder browser, search bar, and filters to find the content you want to restore or export. When using search, only one item can be selected and restored at a time.

For detailed instructions, see How to Search and Filter a Data Source and How to Search and Filter an Entra ID Data Source.

Understand Deleted status

An item marked Deleted is no longer active in Microsoft 365 or is no longer supported for backup, such as data tied to a disabled or unlicensed account. Deleted items remain available to restore as long as they are retained by your retention policy.
